Kosi river danger for Nepal and Nepali's

Nepal is the second small country of water sources, but there is a great problem of water .we couldn’t drink pure water.
With water level in the Koshi River crossing the danger level on Wednesday   morning, threat of a repeat of the 2008 floods that caused havoc in eastern Nepal and Bihar looms large.   Water level was recorded at 197,700 cusec at 6:15 am, in 2011 August, higher than the danger level of 150,000, leading
officials at the Koshi barrage control room to switch on the red light and raise red flag indicating danger.
Twenty of the 55 sluice gates of the barrage have been opened to allow flow of water. Incessant rains in the eastern parts of Nepal have led to rise in Koshi’s water level early this monsoon.
Water level on the river had reached 167,000 cusec in August 18, 2008 leading to breaking of embankments and heavy flooding in many villages of eastern Nepal and neighbouring Bihar in India.
With water level continuously rising, experts say that the water could breach newly constructed embankment causing repeat of the devastation witnessed three years ago.

Although the Kosi Barrage was capable of withstanding 900,000 cusecs of water when constructed five decades back, erosion of its eastern embankments over the years has weakened it considerably.
The 2008 floods was an indicator that damage could take place even when the water level was much lower. The highest water level was recorded in 1954 when it had reached 850,000 cusec.
On Thursday, a high-level team headed by home secretary Lilamani Poudel inspected the Kosi Barrage and directed local officials to coordinate with Indian officials and initiate control measures at the earliest.
“The local administration will hold a meeting with Indian authorities on Saturday. If the process is not started immediately, we will hold a government-level meeting with India very soon,” local media quoted Poudel.
Flashfloods and landslips caused by heavy rainfall have damaged several roads and obstructed regular movement of vehicles on many important highways like East-West and Prithvi.

Woman Right

Nepal is the poor country. There are many uneducated people. They do not know what is my right womsan  is housewife.

Every year, in and around March 8, which is marked as International Women’s Day, many programs and activities are organized with great pomp and splendor but the issue of women’s rights regrettably takes a quiet and quick backseat during the rest of the year. This is extremely unfortunate as the issue of gender equality is something that we cannot afford to ignore at least in our part of the world where women at best continue to struggle to find a place at par with men and at worst suffer the worst forms of discrimination and torture.  Take the case of Maya waglel, 45, from Sripur of Triyuga Municipality-9 in Udayapur district who was attacked Sunday with a khukuri by her neighbor on the charge of being a witch.

Ms Wagle’s case is just a case in point. There are many more incidents of similar violence against women that is regularly reported in the media. The cases that make it to the media again form only a small percentage of the brutality that women have to endure on such an unfounded charge. That women in Nepal continue to be discriminated in such a fashion in an age when their counterparts in other parts of the world are heading governments and multinational companies is saddening to say the least.

Let us look at the issue of witchcraft more deeply. We never hear of a man or even a woman from a financially well-off family charged of being a witch. Such charges are always invariably labeled on women from the lowest strata of the society or those who have no one to fend for them. Additionally, such incidents mostly take place at relatively poor and underdeveloped communities pointing clearly to the fact that there is a direct correlation between this problem and the socio-economic condition. Unless the source of the problem is addressed, it is here to stay.

But that does not mean we have to wait until our communities are prosperous to eliminate this societal disease permanently as that may take years to happen especially considering how politics has been unfolding in the country in recent times. The state has to make a start now by meting out exemplary punishment to the perpetrators of the crime. But punishment is a reactive, not a proactive, measure to address the issue. An effective start would be to intensify the social campaigns that help people eliminate their unfounded beliefs and deep-rooted biases. Remember that not every woman has the fighting spirit of Charimaya Tamang. For every Ms Tamang, there are thousands of women who need the unflinching support of the state

Tourist length of stay reaches six-year hight

Nepal is the tourist area. There is  many sences for views.Tourist is the main income sources for nepali people.

Thanks to Nepal Tourism Year 2011, the average length of stay of tourists in Nepal has increased to a six-year high of 12.67 days in 2010-11.

Travel trade analysts attribute this growth to a shift in the purpose of visit from traditional cultural tours to adventure and pilgrimage. “A tourist spends a minimum of 10 days for adventure activities compared to other types of activities, said Aditya Baral, spokesperson of the Nepal Tourism Board. “More tourists going outside Kathmandu also increased the length of stay.”
The increment in tourist stay has also resulted in a rise in their daily spending. The survey shows that daily spending has increased to US$ 46.73 this year from US$ 36.88 last year. The Economic Survey shows that tourists coming for pilgrimage has increased significantly in the current fiscal year. As per the survey, the number of visitors putting down pilgrimage as purpose of visit saw a significant rise of 16.81 percent compared to 10.4 percent in the last fiscal year. Hoteliers admitted that hotels were filled to capacity during the main season for pilgrims, June-August.
“We had full occupancy of pilgrims in June-August last year,” said Raju Bikram Shah, senior general manager of the Shangri-La Hotel and Resort. According to him, travel agencies diversifying their destination packages has also led to a rise in the length of stay.
The survey shows that visitors for trekking and mountaineering, the major tourism products, slowed down this fiscal year. The number of trekkers and mountaineers dropped to 11.65 percent from 20.9 percent in the last fiscal year.

Unique beginning in Nepal

Reworld events are reshaping our needs to generate our own energy. The disaster in Japan, with the Fukushima power plant’s three nuclear reactors now in meltdown, and coupled with monumental troubles in the turbulent Middle East, and with large, oil-exporting countries like Libya in Africa are creating whole new stresses. It also doesn’t seem that the price of energy is set to decrease anytime soon.In Nepal, we have two major, and regular, problems: electricity and fuel. What does the future hold for us to make these two essential items available and affordable? The word “hydroelectricity” has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue for decades now, given Nepal’s yet massive water resources. The Khimti and Karnali projects are being slated as the dispellers of the nation’s energy and economic woes. But does this help solve our power issues, as well as our necessity for fuels?Since earthquakes and tidal waves struck and tormented Japan, the world seems to be reversing its idea of “going nuclear” as the method for meeting escalating energy demands. Germany and Italy are amongst two of the biggest and developed countries to have resoundingly turned their backs on the idea. Germany is even moving more towards becoming a model of green power for all to follow.

Dahal hopeful of breakthrough

However, he did not elaborate how the parties will achieve the breakthrough within a week. Speaking to journalists at the Maoist Parliamentary Party (PP) Office in Singhadurbar, Dahal claimed serious discussions on outstanding issues were underway and expressed confidence that the political parties would discover common ground soon.

“The UCPN (Maoist), as the largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA), is doing its best for the implementation of the five-point pact forged among the three major parties,” he said. “However, we have been discouraged by the disinterest shown by Nepali Congress (NC).”

He added that the implementation of the five-point deal would take pace within a few days.

Dahal underscored that NC's decision to initiate a stir right after the five-point deal sent out the wrong message to the public. He said that Legislature-Parliament was also monitoring the five-point agreement and reiterated that there was no alternative to its implementation. “However, NC is not cooperating to implement the five-point deal,” he said.

Flood roundup: 6 lives lost; havoc unabated

RAJBIRAJ, JUL 02 -
At least six people died due to floods on Saturday. In Mahottari, minors Srawan Raut (4) and Bishwajit Raut (2) were swept away by Ratu River. In Rupandehi, an unidentified man in his early sixties was swept away by Ghamaha River at Parroha. In Khotang, 19-year-old Samjhana Rai drowned trying to cross Chhakalung river at Solma. In Rautahat, 10-year-old Sehawaj Begam was swept away by a Kamadehi stream. The body of 14-year-old Raju Kanaujay, who went missing in Friday’s flood in Tinau river in Palpa, was recovered at Madanpokhara VDC of the district.

Meanwhile, around 2,000 houses in Saptari district are waterlogged after Mahuli and Koshi rivers breached their banks and entered human settlements on Friday evening. As many as 1,000 houses at Bhardaha and Portaha VDCs got waterlogged when Mahuli dam burst while repair work was underway.

Ramjanam Yadav, a local, said flood has affected wards 7, 8 and 9 of Bhardaha and wards 6, 7 and 8 of Portaha. He said settlements are overwhelmed by over two feet deep water. The swollen Koshi river breached its bank and entered Gobargada VDC, inundating it and affecting at least 1,000 houses.

Gobargada local Laxman Yadav said floodwater in parts reached up to four feet, damaging foodstuff and property. Floodwater from Koshi has ruined a large tract of farmland in Bhardaha and Bairawa. Nonstop rain caused Balan river to breach its dam at Malhaniya VDC-5. Many plants and factories at Khanar, Sonapur and Duhabi in Sunsari district are waterlogged, and houses in Duhabi VDC are facing the fury of flooded Budi river.

POOR NEPALI

Mahendra Lawoti has raised an interesting issue
(“Limits of Proportionality,” Jul 1, page 7).
But one major group has been ignored in his essay:
poor Nepalis. Ethnic experts should visit Kathmandu
Dabali at night and try to determine the religion,
ethnicity, and caste of people sleeping after a hard
day's work. In the articles photograph, one can see
women who can afford to celebrate their culture.
Poor Nepalis have just one caste, culture and
ethnicity: poverty. Only rich people can afford
to celebrate any culture they take a fancy to—these
are the people who celebrate four different New Years
days annually!
