FLOOD ROUND UP

Flood roundup: 6 lives lost; havoc unabated

RAJBIRAJ, JUL 02 -
At least six people died due to floods on Saturday. In Mahottari, minors Srawan Raut (4) and Bishwajit Raut (2) were swept away by Ratu River. In Rupandehi, an unidentified man in his early sixties was swept away by Ghamaha River at Parroha. In Khotang, 19-year-old Samjhana Rai drowned trying to cross Chhakalung river at Solma. In Rautahat, 10-year-old Sehawaj Begam was swept away by a Kamadehi stream. The body of 14-year-old Raju Kanaujay, who went missing in Friday’s flood in Tinau river in Palpa, was recovered at Madanpokhara VDC of the district.

Meanwhile, around 2,000 houses in Saptari district are waterlogged after Mahuli and Koshi rivers breached their banks and entered human settlements on Friday evening. As many as 1,000 houses at Bhardaha and Portaha VDCs got waterlogged when Mahuli dam burst while repair work was underway.

Ramjanam Yadav, a local, said flood has affected wards 7, 8 and 9 of Bhardaha and wards 6, 7 and 8 of Portaha. He said settlements are overwhelmed by over two feet deep water. The swollen Koshi river breached its bank and entered Gobargada VDC, inundating it and affecting at least 1,000 houses.

Gobargada local Laxman Yadav said floodwater in parts reached up to four feet, damaging foodstuff and property. Floodwater from Koshi has ruined a large tract of farmland in Bhardaha and Bairawa. Nonstop rain caused Balan river to breach its dam at Malhaniya VDC-5. Many plants and factories at Khanar, Sonapur and Duhabi in Sunsari district are waterlogged, and houses in Duhabi VDC are facing the fury of flooded Budi river.
