Mahendra Lawoti has raised an interesting issue
(“Limits of Proportionality,” Jul 1, page 7).
But one major group has been ignored in his essay:
poor Nepalis. Ethnic experts should visit Kathmandu
Dabali at night and try to determine the religion,
ethnicity, and caste of people sleeping after a hard
day's work. In the articles photograph, one can see
women who can afford to celebrate their culture.
Poor Nepalis have just one caste, culture and
ethnicity: poverty. Only rich people can afford
to celebrate any culture they take a fancy to—these
are the people who celebrate four different New Years
days annually!
